The Polish Museum in Rapperswil, Switzerland was founded in 1870 by Count Władysław Broel-Plater on the grounds of a medieval castle above Lake Zurich — conceived specifically as a repository for Polish national archives, art, and artifacts during the long period of Partitions when no Polish state existed to house them. It functioned as something close to a government-in-exile for Polish cultural memory. The coin marks the museum's 130th anniversary.
Notably, the Rapperswil collections were shipped back to Warsaw in 1927 following Polish independence, nearly emptying the castle entirely before a second phase of the institution was reconstituted by émigré communities after 1939.
