Poland issued two distinct versions of this Kazimierz Wielki 10 złotych piece in 1964, differentiated by whether the edge lettering is raised or incuse — this being the incuse variant. The distinction matters because the two types were produced for different purposes: the raised-legend version was the standard circulation issue, while the incuse-legend coins were struck for collector sets distributed through Pewex, the state-controlled hard-currency retail network that sold Polish goods abroad during the PRL period.
Kazimierz III was selected for the series partly because 1964 marked the 600th anniversary of the Jagiellonian University, which he founded in Kraków in 1364.
