Additional information

Sigismund II Augustus was the last Jagiellonian king, and his death in 1572 triggered the creation of the Polish-Lithuanian Commonwealth's elected monarchy — one of the more consequential constitutional pivots in early modern European history. Poland has returned to him repeatedly as a commemorative subject, in part because his reign coincided with the peak of Polish Renaissance culture and the 1569 Union of Lublin.

This issue is part of the NBP's ongoing Kings and Princes of Poland series, which began in the early 1990s as the country rebuilt its national institutions after communist rule.
