The phrase commemorated here — the opening line of what became the Polish national anthem — originated in 1797 when General Józef Wybicki wrote the "Mazurek Dąbrowskiego" for the Polish Legions fighting under Napoleon in northern Italy. Poland had ceased to exist as a sovereign state following the Third Partition of 1795, and the song was a deliberate act of defiance, insisting the nation survived in its people even without a state. The 1996 issue marks the anthem's bicentennial.
Wybicki's lyrics were not officially adopted as the national anthem until 1927, over a century after they were written.
