Ignacy Łukasiewicz distilled the world's first kerosene from seep oil in Lviv in 1852 and used it that same year to light a hospital pharmacy — the Lviv City Hospital performed what may have been the first surgery conducted under kerosene lamp light in April 1854. He went on to sink one of the earliest purposefully drilled oil wells at Bóbrka in 1854, a site that still operates today as a living museum of the petroleum industry.
