Obverse description The obverse features the Polish state eagle — the crowned white eagle with wings spread, displayed in high relief at the top of the field. Below the eagle, the full state name is inscribed in bold capital letters arranged across three lines: POLSKA / RZECZPOSPOLITA / LUDOWA, followed by the date 1973 in the lower field. The design is characteristic of the People's Republic of Poland coinage style, with the mint mark MW positioned to the left of the eagle. The legends and numerals are rendered in a clean, modernist typeface with wide letter spacing.

Additional information

The National Education Commission (Komisja Edukacji Narodowej), established by the Polish Sejm in 1773, was the first state ministry of education in the world — created directly in response to the dissolution of the Jesuit order, whose schools had dominated Polish education for two centuries. The bicentennial in 1973 fell under the Gierek government, which leaned heavily on historical prestige to legitimize its modernization program. This trial strike represents the second of at least two CuNi compositional tests conducted before the final issue parameters were fixed, with the Fischer and ParM references distinguishing it from the first-type trial by die characteristics rather than alloy.
