| Obverse description | Standing figure of Saint Mark the Evangelist, nimbed and robed, faces right extending a gonfalon (ducal standard) toward the kneeling Doge Paolo Renier at right, who receives the banner in a gesture of investiture. A vertical staff bearing the denomination mark 'X' separates the two figures centrally. The surrounding Latin legend reads PAVL·RAINER·S·M·VENET·DVX, identifying the Doge as servant of Saint Mark and Duke of Venice. The composition follows the long-established Venetian zecchino iconographic tradition, rendered in the bold, stylized relief characteristic of late-Republic hammered gold coinage. |
