Obverse description The national emblem of the People's Republic of China occupies the central field, depicting the Tiananmen Gate beneath a large five-pointed star flanked by four smaller stars, all encircled by a wreath of grain ears bound at the base by a cogwheel. Symmetrical decorative foliate scrollwork flanks the emblem at either side. The Chinese legend 中华人民共和国 (People's Republic of China) is inscribed in a single horizontal line below the emblem, with the date 1989 centered beneath it. The entire design is struck in high-relief proof finish against a deeply mirrored field.

Reverse description A coiled snake, rendered in fine relief after a traditional Chinese brush-painting composition, dominates the central field, its body sinuously wrapped amid stylized grass and reed foliage. The serpent's head is raised and turned, conveying naturalistic vitality characteristic of the Chinese Lunar series artistic style. An artist's seal inscription in Chinese characters appears at the lower left. Along the upper periphery, a bilingual legend in Chinese and Latin characters reads 含纯银1盎司 成色.999 1oz Ag, indicating the coin's one troy ounce fine silver content. The face value 10元 is inscribed in bold characters at the bottom of the field.
