China's lunar New Year coinage has been issued annually since 1981, making the rooster the second full cycle through the zodiac for the series. The 2017 bimetallic circulation issue was produced in enormous quantities — the People's Bank of China rarely publishes precise mintage figures for these base-metal pieces — and saw genuine everyday use, which distinguishes it sharply from the silver and gold collector versions issued alongside it.
