| Obverse description | The bimetallic obverse features the large numeral '10' prominently in the copper-nickel centre, flanked to the left by the Latin romanization 'SHI YUAN' and to the right by the Chinese character '元', all set against a decorative guilloche background with traditional floral scroll motifs. The issuer's legend '中国人民银行' (People's Bank of China) arcs along the upper periphery of the brass outer ring, rendered in raised Chinese characters. The date '2017' appears in Arabic numerals along the lower periphery of the ring. A small micro-inscription 'RMB 10 YUAN' is present at the base of the numeral in the centre field. The outer ring is bordered by a fine raised bead pattern running along the entire circumference. |

China's lunar New Year coinage has been issued annually since 1981, making the rooster the second full cycle through the zodiac for the series. The 2017 bimetallic circulation issue was produced in enormous quantities — the People's Bank of China rarely publishes precise mintage figures for these base-metal pieces — and saw genuine everyday use, which distinguishes it sharply from the silver and gold collector versions issued alongside it.
