The 2019 lunar issue marks the beginning of the third cycle of the People's Bank of China's modern commemorative lunar series, which launched in 1981. China's zodiac coin program is one of the longest continuously issued series of its kind, and the Pig — last in the twelve-year rotation — has appeared in three distinct design treatments across the cycles, each commission reflecting the prevailing aesthetic priorities of the mint at the time.
