China's lunar silver series has been issued annually since 1981, making the Ox one of the later entries in a now well-established program. The 2009 issue coincided with the global financial crisis, a period during which demand for Chinese lunar bullion coins surged sharply as investors rotated into hard assets — driving premiums on the series well above melt value for the first time in years.
