| Obverse description | Central field features a stylized dog rendered in an archaic Chinese decorative art style, depicted in profile with spiral and circular motifs covering its body, evoking ancient bronze vessel ornamentation. The dog is set against a frosted field within a raised inner border. A decorative outer border composed of repeating floral and foliate scroll motifs frames the design. Chinese characters appear along the upper arc of the outer border, with the date 2006 inscribed along the lower arc. |

China's Lunar New Year silver series has been issued annually since 1981, making the 2006 Dog one entry in an unbroken run that collectors typically pursue as a complete set. The series began under the direction of the People's Bank of China specifically to capture foreign exchange from overseas Chinese communities and Western collector markets — a commercial calculation that proved correct almost immediately.
The 2006 issue was struck at the Shanghai Mint. Mintage was capped at 60,000 pieces, consistent with the restrained production figures the series maintained through the mid-2000s before demand pushed later issues higher.
