The Nymph of the Luo River series drew from Cao Zhi's third-century prose poem Luoshen Fu, one of the most celebrated works in classical Chinese literature. The 1999 "Return Journey" issue is the second of two coins in the set, the first having depicted the initial encounter between the poet and the river goddess. Splitting a continuous narrative across two issues in a single year was an unusual production choice for the People's Bank, and the pairing was sold primarily as a matched set.
Mintage was limited to 30,000 pieces.
