The Grand Canal's Zhejiang section — running through Hangzhou and connecting to the Yangtze Delta network — was among the most commercially active stretches of the entire waterway during the Tang and Song dynasties, when the canal functioned as the principal artery for grain tribute shipments moving north to the imperial capital. China's 2014 successful UNESCO World Heritage inscription of the Grand Canal prompted a sustained commemorative coinage program that has issued provincial and thematic pieces annually, of which this is among the most recent.
