The Grand Canal series, issued by the People's Bank of China under its ongoing cultural heritage commemorative program, draws from a UNESCO inscription achieved in 2014 — the canal system recognized as the longest artificial waterway in the world, stretching over 1,700 kilometers and dating in its earliest sections to the 5th century BC. Hebei province contains sections of the canal that fell into disuse during the 20th century and have since been subject to active restoration and re-watering campaigns under central government direction.
The 2025 issuances continue a multi-coin format distributing different provincial sections across separate releases — Hebei among them.
