China's Tianwen-1 mission launched in July 2020 and successfully delivered the Zhurong rover to the Martian surface in May 2021 — making China only the second country to successfully operate a rover on Mars. The coin was issued the same year as the landing, while the mission was still actively transmitting data.
Zhurong operated on the Utopia Planitia plain, the same broad volcanic region where the Viking 2 lander touched down in 1976.
