Issued a full year before the Expo opened, this coin was part of a multi-release program the People's Bank ran across 2009 and 2010 to build anticipation for Shanghai's hosting of the World Exposition — the first held in a developing country since Osaka in 1970, by the Chinese government's preferred framing. The 2010 Shanghai Expo ultimately drew over 73 million visitors across its six-month run, making it the most attended world's fair in the event's history.
