| Reverse description | The reverse presents a sophisticated proof field featuring a central rectangular compositional device depicting an abstract, modernist architectural and technological motif, suggestive of futuristic pavilion structures and interconnected systems — emblematic of the World Exposition theme. Decorative floral and branch elements extend into the right field. The denomination 10元 appears in the upper right, rendered in Chinese numerals and the yuan character. The legend 中国2010年上海世界博览会 (China 2010 Shanghai World Expo) runs vertically along the left periphery in Chinese characters. |

Issued a full year before the Expo opened, this coin was part of a multi-release program the People's Bank ran across 2009 and 2010 to build anticipation for Shanghai's hosting of the World Exposition — the first held in a developing country since Osaka in 1970, by the Chinese government's preferred framing. The 2010 Shanghai Expo ultimately drew over 73 million visitors across its six-month run, making it the most attended world's fair in the event's history.
