Sanjiangyuan — "Three River Source" — sits on the Tibetan Plateau and feeds the headwaters of the Yangtze, Yellow, and Mekong rivers. China designated it the country's first national park under its new national park system in October 2021, following decades during which the region had been administered as a nature reserve with considerably weaker protections.
