The "Romance of the Three Kingdoms" silver series ran through the 1990s as part of China's broader push to monetize classical literature through collector coinage — a program that also encompassed Dream of the Red Chamber and Water Margin issues. The 1997 installment arrived the same year Hong Kong was handed back to Britain, a coincidence that lent the entire year's Chinese commemorative output an unusual retrospective nationalism.
Mintages for this series were tightly controlled and largely absorbed by the overseas Chinese collector market, particularly in Hong Kong and Taiwan, where the source material carries deep cultural weight.
