Pick 816 is among the first series issued by the People's Bank of China following its establishment in December 1948 — the notes were printed and pushed into circulation almost simultaneously with the founding of the institution itself, as the new government needed an immediate replacement for the collapsing Nationalist currency. The term "replica" in modern catalog usage flags reproductions made for collectors or reference purposes, since original circulated examples of this series were subject to exchange campaigns and withdrawal programs that destroyed the vast majority of surviving stock.
Provenance documentation matters considerably with this type.
