Obverse description At centre, a finely detailed rendering of the Deheyuan Grand Theatre (大戏楼) within the Summer Palace (颐和园) complex, depicted in traditional Chinese imperial architectural style with multi-tiered curved eaves and colonnaded galleries set upon a broad platform. The country name 中华人民共和国 (People's Republic of China) arcs across the upper field in bold Chinese characters. Below the architectural motif, an inscription in smaller Chinese characters reads 颐和园德和园大戏楼, identifying the depicted structure, with the date 2001 appearing in the lower exergue. The denomination character 圆 is inscribed to the right of the building within the field.

Reverse description The reverse features a vibrant colour-printed design depicting two celebrated characters from the classic Peking Opera scene 'Jiang Xiang He' (将相和, 'The General and the Prime Minister'): the aged general Lian Po, shown with an elaborately painted face (lian pu) in black and white, a long flowing white beard, and richly embroidered robes with dragon motifs in red and gold, and the statesman Lin Xiangru at right, distinguished by his black beard, ornate headdress, and elaborately decorated court robes in gold and green. The denomination 10 元 is inscribed at the top of the field, with the inscription 中国京剧将相和 in vertical arrangement on the left identifying the operatic subject.
