China's platinum Panda series was introduced in 1988, just two years before this piece, targeting Western bullion investors at a moment when platinum commanded a significant premium over gold. The 1990 issue had a mintage of only 2,500 pieces — among the lowest in the series — struck at the Shenzhen Guobao Mint.
