Lin Chong's inclusion in this 2009 series reflects his status as one of the most dramatically rendered figures in Shuihu Zhuan — the 14th-century novel better known in English as Outlaws of the Marsh or Water Margin. His arc, from imperial arms instructor wrongfully framed by a corrupt official to outlaw general at Liangshan, is among the sharpest indictments of Song dynasty bureaucratic rot in classical Chinese literature. The People's Bank began issuing coins from this series in 1997, running it across multiple years with rotating characters drawn from the 108 heroes of the marsh.
Mintage on individual issues in this series was capped at 60,000 pieces.
