Issued as part of China's commemorative program honoring foreign literary figures, this coin was released the same year China was quietly expanding its presence in international cultural diplomacy. The choice of Mark Twain is less obvious than it appears — his sharp satirical attacks on imperialism and racial hypocrisy had made him a figure of genuine interest in Chinese intellectual circles well before 1991, particularly his anti-imperialist essays circulated during the Republican period.
