Part of China's long-running Olympic sports commemorative series, this issue was released ahead of the 1990 Asian Games held in Beijing — the first time China had hosted a major multi-sport international event. The games carried enormous political weight domestically, coming just a year after Tiananmen Square, and the commemorative coin program was deliberately expansive, with multiple denominations struck in both silver and gold across the full athletics lineup.
The .900 fine silver issues in this series are occasionally encountered with uneven surface quality attributable to early 1990s Chinese Mint production inconsistencies, not post-mint handling.
