| Obverse description | Central to the obverse is a finely detailed relief depiction of the main ceremonial gate of Putuoshan (Putuo Mountain), the sacred Buddhist island in Zhejiang Province revered as the bodhimanda of Guanyin. The ornate multi-tiered traditional Chinese architectural structure is rendered with exceptional precision, showing curved eave rooflines, decorative latticed panels, and a broad stone terrace at its base. The country name 中华人民共和国 (People's Republic of China) arcs along the upper periphery in Chinese characters, while the inscription 普陀山 (Putuoshan) and the date 1997 appear in the lower field beneath the gate. The mirror-polished proof field provides strong contrast against the frosted architectural relief. |
