| Obverse description | A detailed architectural rendering of the main temple gate of Putuoshan (普陀山), the sacred Buddhist island associated with Guanyin, occupies the central field. The multi-tiered ceremonial pailou gateway is depicted in fine relief with traditional Chinese roof elements and open archways. Arranged in a semicircle around the upper periphery is the Chinese legend 中华人民共和国 (People's Republic of China). Below the gate, the inscription 普陀山 identifies the sacred site, and the date 1996 appears in the lower exergue. |
