| Obverse description | A detailed proof-finish view of the Meridian Gate (午门, Wumen) of the Forbidden City, rendered in high relief against a mirrored field. The monumental triple-arched gate complex with its flanking watchtowers is depicted in perspective, with a broad ceremonial stairway and ramp receding dramatically into the foreground. The arc of Chinese characters 中华人民共和国 (People's Republic of China) appears as a legend along the upper rim. In the lower field, the inscription 午门 建于明代 (Meridian Gate, Built in the Ming Dynasty) is inscribed alongside the date 1997. |
