Issued as part of China's long-running classical literature commemorative series, this coin draws from Cao Xueqin's 18th-century novel, left unfinished at his death around 1763 and completed — controversially — by Gao E some decades later. The People's Bank began the Dream of Red Mansions silver series in 2002, issuing multiple coins across several years, each pulling from different episodes and characters within a novel so sprawling it sustained an entire academic discipline in China known as Hónglóu studies.
Mintage for individual issues in this series was capped at 60,000 pieces.
