The Dream of the Red Chamber series ran across multiple issues in the early 2000s, drawing on Cao Xueqin's 18th-century novel — one of the Four Great Classical Novels of Chinese literature and a work that survived largely through handwritten manuscript copies before its first printed edition in 1791. The People's Bank issued this 2003 coin as part of a multi-year commemorative program targeting both domestic collectors and the overseas Chinese market.
Mintage for the series was tightly controlled, with individual issues typically capped at 60,000 pieces.
