The Dream of the Red Chamber series was issued across multiple years beginning in the 1980s, with the 2000 release marking a late entry in a long-running commemorative program tied to one of the Four Great Classical Novels of Chinese literature. By this point the People's Bank had refined its approach to proof silver commemoratives considerably, and the series had already built a dedicated collector following both domestically and among overseas Chinese communities.
