Obverse description Central device comprises the national emblem of the People's Republic of China: Tiananmen Gate rendered in fine relief, surrounded by a wreath of grain ears tied at the base with a ribbon, surmounted by five five-pointed stars arranged in the standard configuration. The circular legend 中華人民共和國 (People's Republic of China) arcs around the upper field in Chinese characters. The date 1991 appears in the lower exergue in Arabic numerals. The mirror-like proof fields provide strong contrast against the frosted devices.

Additional information

Issued as part of China's 1992 Albertville Winter Olympics commemorative series, this coin appeared well before Chinese winter sport had any meaningful international presence — the country wouldn't claim its first Winter Olympics gold medal until 2002. The series was produced primarily for the export collector market, with distribution handled largely through foreign dealers rather than domestic channels.
