Xiamen University, founded in 1921 by overseas Chinese businessman Tan Kah Kee using his personal fortune, was the first university in China established entirely with funds from the Chinese diaspora. Tan had made his wealth in rubber and pineapple ventures in Southeast Asia, and his decision to fund a modern university in his Fujian homeland rather than rebuild his struggling business empire after financial losses became one of the more celebrated acts of private philanthropy in Republican-era China.
