Southwestern University of Finance and Economics, founded in Chengdu in 1925 as the Sichuan Provincial Institute of Finance and Commerce, spent decades under various reorganizations before the Communist government restructured it into its current form in 1952. The centenary commemoration follows an established People's Bank pattern of issuing .999 silver pieces for Chinese institutional anniversaries — a program that has expanded considerably since the 1990s and now covers universities, cultural sites, and founding events with near-annual frequency.
