The "Auspicious Matters" series drew on a deep reservoir of folk symbolism that the Chinese Communist Party had officially discouraged for decades — bats, gourds, fish, and other traditional luck emblems that survived the Cultural Revolution largely in rural craft traditions. By the mid-1990s, the state mint was actively monetizing exactly the imagery that propaganda campaigns had once treated with suspicion. This coin was struck for the collector market rather than circulation, part of a broader push by the People's Bank to generate hard currency through numismatic exports.
