Issued as part of a broader commemorative program marking the 70th anniversary of Japan's surrender in 1945, this coin was released alongside a massive state-orchestrated parade through Beijing's Tiananmen Square on September 3, 2015 — the first time China had declared that date an official public holiday. The parade, attended by Vladimir Putin and other foreign leaders, was the largest military display China had staged in decades and formed the explicit backdrop for this entire release series.
The People's Bank issued multiple denominations and compositions under the same program. The silver one-ounce piece is the most widely traded of the group internationally.
