Issued to mark the fiftieth anniversary of the proclamation of the People's Republic on October 1, 1949, this bimetallic commemorative was part of a broader wave of official celebrations that included military parades, mass performances in Tiananmen Square, and an extensive state media campaign. The People's Bank of China produced several commemorative issues tied to the occasion across different denominations and materials; this circulating bimetallic sits at the accessible end of that program.
China had only begun issuing bimetallic coinage in the 1990s, and the format was still relatively novel for domestic circulation at the time of striking.
