Issued in 1995 to mark the fiftieth anniversary of Japan's surrender on September 2, 1945, this coin appeared during a period of heightened Sino-Japanese diplomatic tension, when Beijing was simultaneously pressing Tokyo for a formal apology over wartime atrocities. The commemorative program was extensive — multiple silver and gold issues were released under the same theme, targeting both domestic collectors and the overseas Chinese market.
The Anti-Japanese War, known in China as the War of Resistance, cost an estimated 14 to 20 million Chinese civilian lives by most modern tallies.
