Comments

The Bank of Taiwan operated as a quasi-central bank for the Republic of China government after its retreat from the mainland in 1949, issuing currency independently of the Central Bank of China, which had effectively ceased meaningful operations. This arrangement persisted for decades — the Central Bank of China did not formally resume its role as sole currency authority until 1961, and even then the transition was gradual.

The 1954 series was printed entirely in-house at the Bank of Taiwan's own facility, an unusual degree of self-sufficiency for a postwar issuer still operating under considerable economic strain from the military standoff across the strait.
