Foo Hang Bank was one of several small private banks operating in Macao during the 1930s, issuing notes that circulated locally alongside Portuguese patacas and notes from larger institutions. The 1937 date places this squarely in the year the Second Sino-Japanese War erupted on the mainland — a conflict that made Macao, as a neutral Portuguese territory, an increasingly unusual financial island surrounded by chaos.
Local printing in Macao for private bank issues of this period was common but produced notes of notoriously variable quality. Paper stocks and inks were often sourced under difficult conditions, and many examples show uneven impression as a result.
