The Jiangnan Shipyard, founded in 1865 by Zeng Guofan and Li Hongzhang as part of the Qing dynasty's Self-Strengthening Movement, was China's first modern industrial shipyard and later produced the country's first domestically built warship, the Cao Jiang, in 1868. By the time of this issue's release, the yard had been relocated from its original Huangpu River site in Shanghai to Changxing Island — a move completed in 2008 ahead of the World Expo — ending over 140 years of continuous operation at a single urban location.
