The "Yeni" (New) designation on this coin was introduced in 2005 alongside the redenominated New Turkish Lira, a reform that dropped six zeros from the old currency following one of the worst inflation collapses in modern monetary history — the lira had, at its nadir, traded at over 1.6 million to the US dollar. The "Yeni" prefix was always intended as temporary, and these coins were officially retired from that designation in 2009 when Turkey quietly dropped the word and reverted to plain "Kuruş."
