Trial pieces from the Osaka Mint occupy a peculiar institutional space — produced not for circulation but for internal approval processes, yet struck in the actual intended metal rather than lead or copper, which was unusual by international standards of the period. This particular piece reflects the Meiji government's aggressive push to establish a Western-style coinage infrastructure after 1871, when the New Currency Act overhauled Japan's monetary system almost overnight.
