正面描述 Central field features a detailed frontal view of the Byōdō-in Phoenix Hall (鳳凰堂), a celebrated 11th-century Buddhist temple in Uji, Kyoto Prefecture, rendered with fine architectural detail including its extended lateral corridors and distinctive multi-tiered rooflines. The temple complex is flanked on either side by decorative foliate scrollwork. Above the central hall, the country name is inscribed in two characters within square cartouches at upper left and upper right, with the character 本 appearing at the top centre. The denomination 十円 (Ten Yen) is rendered in stylised characters within an ornamental cartouche at the lower portion of the field, framed by further foliate and scroll ornamentation. The entire design is enclosed within a raised rim.

背面描述 Central field displays the bold Arabic numeral '10' in large raised characters, flanked symmetrically by two upright olive branches tied at the base with a decorative ribbon bow. Below the numeral, the reign-year inscription in classical Japanese is rendered horizontally across the centre of the field. The date reads in the Shōwa regnal system, here shown as 昭和四十九年 (Year 49 of Shōwa, corresponding to 1974), though the specific year varies by issue. The reverse design is spare and elegant, relying on the interplay of the bold numeral, the graceful laurel sprays, and the regnal date legend. The whole is contained within a plain raised rim.
