The Bank of Chosun was the colonial central bank of Japanese-occupied Korea, and this late-war issue reflects the severe resource pressures of 1944–45. Paper quality deteriorated markedly across this series as Japan's wartime supply chains collapsed, and surviving examples frequently show browning, brittleness, or foxing that is endemic to the type rather than indicative of unusual handling.
After liberation in August 1945, Bank of Chosun notes remained in provisional circulation on the peninsula while new monetary arrangements were negotiated — a period of overlap that added a second wave of wear to many surviving pieces.
