This note belongs to the wartime "B-yen" series, issued as Japan's economy was under severe strain from Pacific theater costs. Paper quality deteriorated noticeably across the 1943–1944 run as raw material shortages hit the Cabinet Printing Bureau directly — later printings within the series show measurably thinner, more brittle stock than earlier ones, and surviving examples frequently exhibit foxing and edge fragility for that reason rather than through rough handling.
The watermark remained, but it was a diminishing security gesture by this point. Counterfeiting pressure from Allied psychological warfare operations was already a known concern to Japanese monetary authorities in this period.
