Jethou is a privately tenanted island of roughly 18 hectares, leased from the Crown — its tenant in 2009 being the telecommunications entrepreneur Sir Peter Ogden. The "Xeros Ceros" denomination is invented currency with no legal tender status anywhere, produced as a novelty issue rather than a functioning monetary instrument. These pattern pieces exist largely as curiosities documenting the micro-nation coin craze of the 2000s, when private islands and territorial oddities worldwide began issuing collector-targeted coinage of dubious official standing.
