Latvia re-established its currency sovereignty briefly — the lats had survived Soviet occupation in memory if not in circulation — but by the time these brass circulation pieces were struck in 2014, the country was just days away from adopting the euro on January 1st of that year, making this among the final Latvian lats coinage produced before the switchover rendered the entire series obsolete within weeks of minting.
